Questions I’ve been asked about the United States

Are you from New York too?

Do they have cats there?

Do they not use them [cell phones] there?

What do you use to clean your pots?

What is the experience of prom like?

Is America in the same time zone as Canada?

Is Christmas still in December?

What do you call American football?

You don’t eat mealie meal? Do you just eat rice every day?

Is it?

  1. How funny - we think we are so aware and connected with other cultures because of all our technology - but these questions show such an innocence of knowledge. I just learned from reading about Afghanistan that they think dogs are disgusting animals and Americans so for allowing dogs into our homes and some - into beds! I think I agree with the Afghan sentiment on this one.

  2. Haha, the person who asked me about cats was asking about what kinds of animals we have in America, and there are a lot of cats that just roam around here that aren't pets, so that's probably why cats came to mind.

  3. "Is it?" What does that mean? Is it a question about whether the United States are actually united?

I love that people in South Africa have heard of prom, though.

  4. They say "Is it?" all the time about everything, kind of how we use "Really?" even it doesn't make sense grammatically. For example: "It was snowing when I left the US." "Is its?"

  5. Also, I was actually asked about prom by two people (ironic considering that I was at science olympiad nationals and didn't even go to prom). Apparently based on American movies they think it's the best thing about high school.
